Meaningful Activity Shouldn’t Depend on Staff Availability
Care homes know how important regular cognitive engagement is for resident wellbeing. Yet creating opportunities throughout the day isn’t always easy.
Many activities require preparation, supervision or scheduled sessions, while digital products often assume users can navigate instructions, menus or complicated controls.
For people living with dementia, taking the first step towards an activity can often be the greatest challenge.
As a result, opportunities for spontaneous, independent engagement can be limited.
A Simpler Way to Keep Minds Engaged
Ding Dong was created to remove as many barriers to participation as possible.
How it works is incredibly simple.
Residents simply pick up the controller and move the on-screen paddle up or down to keep the ball in play.
There are no menus. No instructions. No scores. No settings.
Just a calm, predictable interaction that many residents understand within seconds.
Once connected to an existing television using a standard HDMI connection, Ding Dong remains available throughout the day, allowing residents to engage whenever they choose before simply walking away for the next person to enjoy.
Sometimes Starting is The Hardest Part
One of the key insights behind Ding Dong is that beginning an activity can often be more difficult than participating once it has started. To help overcome this, Ding Dong includes Invite Mode.
When nobody is actively playing, gentle movement remains visible on the television, acting as a subtle invitation for residents to approach and interact naturally.
Without instructions. Without prompting. Without pressure. Just a simple visual cue that encourages curiosity and participation.
Why it Works
Designed Specifically for Dementia.
Most digital activities are designed for the general population and lated adapted for older adults. Ding Dong was developed differently. From the very beginning, every part of the experience was designed specifically for people living with dementia.
Everything has been simplified to reduce anxiety, remove unnecessary decisions and encourage independent participation.
- Large, Clear Visuals – Easy to follow without becoming overwhelming.
- Two Simple Controls – Residents only need to move up or down.
- No Learning Curve – Nothing to remember. Nothing to navigate.
- Calm Predictable Gameplay – Consistent movement creates confidence and familiarity.
- Always Ready – Residents can engage whenever the moment feels right.
Designed Around Everyday Care Home Life
Unlike scheduled activities, Ding Dong is always available. Residents can play independently for a few minutes or much longer before simply walking away.
Staff don’t need to organise sessions, prepare equipment or supervise every interaction. It complements existing activity programmes by creating additional opportunities for engagement throughout the day.
Suitable for:
- Residential Care Homes
- Nursing Homes
- Dementia Care Units
- Communal Lounges
- Individual Resident Rooms
Inspired by Family
Ding Dong began with a childhood memory. Growing up, founder Paul would often play simple bat-and-ball games with his father. His dad affectionately called the back-and-forth rhythm “ding dong”.
Years later, when both of Paul’s parents were living with dementia. he experienced firs-hand how difficult it could be to find activities that residents could understand and enjoy independently.
Many required instructions. Many required supervision. Many simply weren’t accessible enough. That experience inspired a simple question:
Could an activity be so intuitive that almost anyone could understand it within seconds?
Ding Dong is the result of that question. A simple activity designed to create more moments of meaningful engagement for people living with dementia.
